Provider Modules

This five-module educational series is designed to equip outpatient clinicians in Utah with the knowledge, skills, and practical tools needed to confidently diagnose and treat Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) in everyday clinical practice.

Module 1 - Understanding Opioid Use Disorder: A Modern Clinical Framework

Purpose: Establish foundational knowledge and reframe OUD as a chronic, treatable medical condition.
Core Topics:

  • Neurobiology of OUD

  • DSM-5 diagnostic criteria

  • Common misconceptions (“MAT as replacing one drug with another,” “only specialists can treat OUD”)

  • The continuum of OUD severity

  • Harm-reduction principles

  • Stigma and its impact on access to care

Module 2 — Evidence-Based MAT: Buprenorphine, Methadone & Naltrexone

Purpose: Provide actionable, practical understanding of MAT options, with emphasis on buprenorphine in outpatient settings.
Core Topics:

  • Mechanism, dosing basics, and safety profiles

  • Initiation protocols (traditional, micro-dosing/low-dose induction, precipitated withdrawal prevention)

  • Managing acute pain in patients on MAT

  • Pregnancy considerations

  • Telehealth considerations and federal/state regulations

  • Myth busting: diversion, overdose risk, treatment “failures,” etc.

Module 3 — Clinical Workflow: Screening, Starting Treatment & Follow-Up

Purpose: Give clinicians a simple workflow they can implement immediately.
Core Topics:

  • Screening tools (DAST-10, ORT, single-question screen)

  • When and how to diagnose OUD in primary care

  • Brief intervention scripts

  • Same-day buprenorphine initiation: steps, documentation, safety checks

  • Follow-up cadence: 1 week → 2–4 weeks → monthly

  • Managing co-occurring mental health conditions

  • When to refer and when to continue managing in primary care

  • Avoiding unnecessary barriers (e.g., mandatory therapy, frequent visits without clinical indication)

Module 4 — Utah & Salt Lake City OUD Resources: Referral Pathways, Care Coordination & Community Supports

Purpose: Provide clinicians with a comprehensive, unbiased, practical reference for navigating OUD care resources in Utah and Salt Lake City.
Core Topics:

  • Why Local Resource Knowledge Is Critical for OUD Care

When and how to diagnose OUD in primary care

Understanding ASAM Levels of Care & What Exists in Utah

  • Mapping the Utah/Salt Lake City OUD Care Landscape

  • Building a Functional OUD Referral Pathway for Your Clinic

  • Common Referral Scenarios and Best Practices

  • Integrating Harm Reduction into Everyday Clinical Practice

  • Practical Tools & Scripts for Clinicians

Module 5 — Case-Based Learning for OUD Treatment

Purpose: Reinforce practical, real-world application of OUD diagnosis, MAT initiation, harm reduction, and care coordination through structured clinical scenarios.
Core Topics:

  • Case 1: Daily Fentanyl Use With Desire to Start Treatment

When and how to diagnose OUD in primary care

  • Case 2: Patient in Moderate Opioid Withdrawal in Clinic

  • Case 3: Pregnant Individual Using Fentanyl

  • Case 4: Patient With Co-Occurring Anxiety and Benzodiazepine Use

  • Case 5: Recurrent Relapse on Buprenorphine

  • Case 6: Patient With Severe Mental Illness + Unstable Housing

  • Case 7: Patient Using Stimulants + Opioids (“Goofballs”)

  • Case 8: Post-Overdose ED Discharge With No Follow-Up
